5 Common Excuses for Avoiding Estate Planning (and Why It’s Time to Let Them Go)
Let's be honest - no one loves thinking about estate planning. It’s one of those things that tends to land at the bottom of the to-do list, right next to cleaning out the garage or figuring out what’s for dinner five nights from now. But here’s the thing: estate planning doesn’t have to be scary, overwhelming, or reserved for the ultra-wealthy. And pushing it off? That can actually create more stress in the long run.
According to the National Institutes of Health, people actually feel better - more at peace - when they face death-related topics head-on. Avoiding them might feel easier in the moment, but it can lead to emotional and logistical challenges down the line. Here are some of the most common reasons I hear for delaying estate planning - along with a few thoughts that might help shift your perspective:
1. “Estate planning is only for old people.”
This is a common misconception. Yes, estate planning is important for older adults, but it’s equally important for younger folks - especially if you’ve started a family, bought a home, or built up assets.
And here’s something most people don’t realize: if you wait too long and something happens, like a medical issue that affects your ability to make decisions, it may be too late to legally create a Will, Trust, or advance healthcare directive. Starting early gives you options and peace of mind. Plus, once it’s done, you can check it off and not think about it again for a long time (unless life changes)!
2. “I’m not rich enough to need an estate plan.”
Estate planning isn’t just for people with yachts and vacation homes. It’s for everyone.
Even if you don’t think you have “a lot,” you probably care about who would make medical or financial decisions for you in an emergency or what happens to your home, savings, or personal items if something unexpected and sudden occurs.
A solid estate plan can protect your loved ones, reduce stress during tough times, and even save them money by avoiding a complicated court process. It’s not about how much you have - it’s about making sure what you do have ends up in the right hands, with as little fuss as possible.
3. “I’m too busy with work and family right now.”
Totally get it. Life is full. But here’s the good news: estate planning doesn’t have to take a ton of time. Most of my clients are surprised at how streamlined the process can be.
We start with a short call to understand your goals. Then, I take care of the heavy lifting behind the scenes. Before you know it, you’ll have everything signed and squared away.
Think of it as a small investment of time now that can make life much easier for your family later.
4. “I don’t want to think about death.”
Honestly? That makes total sense. None of us do. But the truth is, the more we avoid thinking about it, the more we leave unfinished business that can cause stress or uncertainty for those we love.
On the flip side, when you take the time to get your wishes in order, something shifts. You feel more grounded, more prepared and maybe even more peaceful. Estate planning isn’t just about death; it’s about taking control and caring for the people you love.
5. “It doesn’t really matter what happens after I’m gone.”
I hear this from time to time, especially from folks who feel unsure about their legacy. But here’s what I always say: if there’s anyone or anything you care about - nieces, nephews, close friends, charities, your community - your plan can reflect that.
Estate planning gives you the chance to make a real, lasting impact, no matter how big or small. You can fund a grandchild’s education, support a cause close to your heart, or simply make sure your personal items go to the people who will treasure them most.
Ready to Get Started?
There’s no rule that says you have to create an estate plan. But once you do, you might wonder why you waited so long. It’s one of those rare to-do list items that brings real peace of mind - not just for you, but for the people who matter most in your life.
If you’ve been putting this off, I’d be happy to help make it easier. Let’s talk. No pressure, just a friendly conversation to explore your options.
